Oji Foodservice Packaging is revolutionising paper cup sustainability with the release of their brand-new pulp lids. Made from wood pulp, they provide a naturally-renewable, biodegradable and compostable alternative to plastic lids.

Disposable coffee cups have been capped using plastic lids since the 1970s, when the polystyrene plastic lid was first introduced to the market. Polystyrene – commonly known as plastic #6 – is the most commonly used polymer in the manufacture of coffee cup lids.

Beverage lids, along with other plastics can become litter, contributing to the problem of waste plastic in waterways and the marine environment. Despite systems being in place for their responsible disposal, much plastic is landfilled rather than recycled.  Some estimates suggest 60 tonnes of cups are landfilled each year in Australia  

Oji Foodservice Packaging new paper-based coffee cup lids are made from wood, a renewable material that breaks down naturally. With billions of polystyrene lids likely to have been manufactured and discarded over the years, the company’s paper based alternative breathes a long-awaited breath of fresh air to the beverage industry.

Oji Foodservice Packaging’s lids are made from paper. This paper remains rigid when exposed to hot substances. The new lids are certified food safe to US FDA standards and AsureQuality certified organic.

The new paper-based lids are considered the next step in an on-going effort by the beverage industry to reduce the effects disposable cups have on the environment. Oji Foodservice Packaging is proud to be able to offer this practical alternative to plastic lids to help safeguard our natural ecosystems.

The company is part of the group the Australian Packaging Covenant has established to address disposal and recycling challenges associated with take-away coffee cups.
